Can AI build a website like Squarespace?

Build me a personal multi-page website (not a single page). Requirements:

- Static HTML/CSS/JavaScript, one file per page (home, about, one content page — portfolio or blog listing, and contact), sharing a consistent header/nav and footer across all of them. No framework, no build step, no CMS, no account.
- The content/blog listing page should pull its list of posts or portfolio items from a single structured data file (e.g. a JSON array) rather than being hardcoded per-item in the HTML, so adding a new post/item later means editing one file, not duplicating markup.
- A working contact page with a form that POSTs to a free form-backend endpoint (like Formspree) — leave a clearly marked placeholder for my endpoint URL/ID.
- Fully responsive navigation: the header should collapse into a mobile menu (hamburger) below a reasonable breakpoint, not just shrink and overlap.
- Handle these cases correctly, not just the simple "few short posts" one:
  1. A content list that grows past what fits on one screen: paginate or lazy-load rather than rendering an ever-longer single page.
  2. A page loaded directly by URL (not via in-site navigation, e.g. someone bookmarks the about page): the shared header/nav and styling must still load correctly, not just when navigating from the home page.
- No online store, no checkout, no payment processing, no built-in email hosting — this is an informational/portfolio site only.
- Nothing that requires publishing, an App Store, a database, or any account beyond the free form-backend service and wherever I choose to host the static files.
- Include a short README explaining the file structure, how to add a new post/item to the content data file, and how to connect a custom domain on free static hosting.
  Keep each individual page file well under 300 lines — this is a personal site, not a product.

What is the short answer?

If your Squarespace site is a personal portfolio, blog, or a few informational pages with no online store, AI can build the equivalent as a set of static pages with shared navigation and styling — genuinely replacing what most of Squarespace’s Basic plan ($16–25/mo) is used for. What you give up is the visual editor (you’ll ask AI to make changes rather than dragging blocks) and the all-in-one bundle of hosting, domain, and email that Squarespace sells as one package.

If you’re running an online store through Squarespace, this isn’t a like-for-like replacement — e-commerce needs its own checkout, inventory, and payment handling that a personal-use build doesn’t cover.

The biggest practical loss is Squarespace’s visual editor — Squarespace lets you drag, resize, and restyle blocks without touching code; a custom-built site means every layout tweak is a conversation with AI and a code change. That’s a real workflow shift, not a missing feature you can patch in easily.

Squarespace also bundles hosting, a custom domain (first year), and optional email hosting into one subscription. Building it yourself means buying a domain separately (typically $10–15/year) and, if you want a matching email address, setting that up through a separate service (Google Workspace, Zoho Mail, or a forwarding service) rather than getting it in the same checkout. If you ever want to sell anything, that’s an entirely separate build — a checkout flow via Stripe or a platform like Gumroad, not a page addition.

How long will it take and what will it cost?

A multi-page personal or portfolio site — 4–5 pages, consistent design, working contact form — is realistically a 1–2 day build, likely spread across a few sessions as you refine the design. Hosting is free on static site platforms, so the only recurring cost is the domain itself, typically $10–15/year.

Against Squarespace Basic at $16–25/mo (roughly $200–300/year), this pays for itself within one to two months of what you’d otherwise keep paying, assuming your site doesn’t need Squarespace’s e-commerce or built-in email.

Which AI tool or approach should I use?

• ChatGPT or Claude: solid for building the site page by page — describe each page’s content and get consistent HTML/CSS across the set.
• Lovable: a reasonable choice if you want a more visual, iterative building experience across multiple pages with less manual CSS tuning.
• Cursor: worth it if you want the whole site in a Git repository from the start, especially useful once the site grows past a handful of pages.

What will I need to maintain?

Free static hosting needs essentially no upkeep — no server patches, no uptime monitoring at this scale. You’ll renew the domain annually. Any content update (new blog post, portfolio piece) means either editing the underlying content file directly or asking AI to add it — slower than Squarespace’s editor, but with no subscription attached. If you added email hosting separately, that’s its own small recurring cost and account to maintain.

Should I build it, buy it, or reduce scope?

Build it if your site is informational or a portfolio with no online store, and you’re comfortable with code-based edits instead of drag-and-drop.

Buy it (keep Squarespace) if you’re selling products, need the all-in-one editor for frequent visual changes, or want domain/email/hosting bundled without separate accounts to manage.

What if I wanted to ship this to other people?

Turning this into a page-builder product for other people to use is a different business entirely — you’d be rebuilding Squarespace’s actual product (visual editing, hosting infrastructure, template marketplace, billing), not extending a personal site. If your goal is instead just to build sites for other people one at a time as a service, that’s more feasible, but it’s a client-work business, not a reusable app.
