Can AI build a resume builder app like Kickresume?

Build a personal resume and cover letter web app to replace Kickresume for my own use.

Tech rules:
- Plain HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript in one file, with a dedicated print stylesheet using @media print. No framework, build step, account, or server.
- Store all data in localStorage under one key, with a version number.

Data model:
- ResumeVersion: id, name (for example "Marketing role - Acme Corp"), sections [], theme (font, color, spacing), createdAt, updatedAt.
- Section: id, type (summary, experience, education, skills, custom), title, visible (boolean), order, content (structured per type).
- CoverLetter: id, linkedResumeVersionId, recipientName, body, createdAt.
- ContactBlock: name, email, phone, location, links [], photoDataUrl (optional).

Features:
- Create multiple named resume versions, each with its own section order and visible/hidden toggles, so I can tailor one per job application without starting over.
- Edit sections directly on the page (not a separate form) with the preview updating live.
- A matching cover letter template that pulls the same font, color, and contact block from a linked resume version.
- Section reordering by drag or up/down buttons, and a hide/show toggle per section so I can drop, say, an "Education" section for one application without deleting its content.
- Toggle a photo and contact block on or off.
- A print/export button that opens the browser's print dialog with the print stylesheet applied, producing a clean one-page PDF.
- A "Plain text version" view: the same content with all styling stripped, as an ATS-friendly alternative to the visual layout.

Edge cases the build must handle correctly:
1. Multi-page layout: warn on-screen if content overflows one page, and let sections be trimmed or font size reduced slightly to fit, rather than silently cutting off content in the print output.
2. Print CSS must render consistently across Chrome, Safari, and Firefox print-to-PDF; test margins and page breaks in each before considering it done.
3. The plain-text ATS version and the visual template stay in sync from the same underlying section content, never maintained as two separate documents.
4. Multiple resume versions stay independent: editing one doesn't change another, even if they started as a copy of each other.
5. The cover letter template stays linked to its resume version's font and color choices, so updating the resume's theme updates the paired cover letter too.
6. Section reordering and hiding must not reorder or delete the underlying content, only its position and visibility, so hidden sections can be re-shown later with their content intact.
7. Custom fonts, colors, and spacing chosen on-screen must survive the PDF export exactly, not fall back to browser print defaults.
8. The photo and contact block toggle applies per resume version, so I can have a photo on one version and not another.

Backup:
- One-click "Export JSON" (all resume versions and cover letters) and "Export PDF" per version.
- "Import JSON" restores after confirmation.

Layout:
- Mobile-first for editing on a phone, readable at 375px wide, but the print stylesheet targets standard letter/A4 page dimensions regardless of screen size.

Exclusions:
- No publishing, App Store submission, accounts, payments, AI-written bullet suggestions, or ATS keyword scoring against a job posting.

Write a short README explaining where data lives, how to export and restore it, and how to print to PDF from each major browser.

Keep it under 600 lines. This is a personal tool, not a product.

What can AI build reliably?

ChatGPT and Claude reliably build a single well-designed HTML and CSS resume page with a print stylesheet. This is close to a solved problem, the template and layout are the easy part.

Concrete things AI gets right:

Where will AI need human help?

Pixel-perfect print CSS that renders identically across Chrome, Safari, and Firefox print-to-PDF dialogs is genuinely fiddly. Margins, page breaks, and font rendering differ slightly between browsers. Test your export in whichever browser you’ll actually use to apply for jobs, and check it again if you switch browsers later.

Multi-page layout and pagination control need your eye, not just the AI’s code. If your content overflows one page, decide whether to trim content or accept a second page; the AI can build a warning for overflow, but the editorial call is yours.

The decision only you can make: Kickresume Premium’s real value-add is AI-generated bullet point suggestions and ATS keyword-matching against a specific job posting, neither of which this build attempts. If that writing help is what you actually want, a template alone doesn’t replace it, you’d still want an AI tool open in a separate tab to help phrase your experience.

Privacy is minor here since it’s your own career information staying local with no account. Still, be mindful about pasting real personal details like your address into a shared AI chat while building; use placeholder data until the template is done.

Can I get my data out of Kickresume?

Yes, easily, and on the free plan with no subscription required. From the resume editor, open the three-dot menu and choose Download for a PDF, or select the Word (.doc) option.

The trap: the Word export strips all graphic elements down to plain text, so your visual template design only survives in the PDF version. No watermark was found on either the free or paid plan, so this isn’t really an export problem, it’s a one-time task: download your current resume as a PDF for reference and start your own template from scratch or by copying its structure and wording.

How long will it take and what will it cost?

Rough prototype: 1–2 hours and $0. One clean, print-ready resume template.

Dependable daily-use version: 3–5 hours, including multiple tailored versions, a matching cover letter, and an ATS-friendly plain-text view. Build it on a free AI plan.

Kickresume Premium costs $19 a month at the standard rate, or $4.50 a month billed annually. A $20 month of a paid AI plan equals just over 1 month of Premium at the monthly rate, so build on a free AI plan unless you’re also using that plan for other things. Which AI tool or approach should I use?

Claude or ChatGPT on a free plan is enough. This build fits comfortably in one conversation, and either tool can also help you write stronger bullet points in a separate conversation, since that’s not something the template itself provides.

Cursor is unnecessary here. The page is small and mostly CSS.

Lovable doesn’t add anything useful for a static, single-user resume page. There’s no need for a hosted database.

What will I need to maintain?

Almost nothing. One file on a free static host, or even just opened locally in a browser.

Recommendation: build your own if you’re comfortable writing your own bullet points and just want a clean, tailorable template.
