Can AI build a digital business card app like Popl?

Build a personal digital business card web app to replace Popl for my own use.

Tech rules:
- Plain HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript in one file. No framework, build step, account, or server.
- Store all data in localStorage under one key, with a version number.

Data model:
- Profile: name, title, company, phone, email, photoUrl, logoUrl, slug, socialLinks [{label, url}].
- Lead: id, name, email, message, capturedAt (only if lead capture is enabled).

Features:
- A hosted card page showing photo, name, title, company, and social links, styled with simple custom branding (colors, logo).
- QR code generated client-side that points to the card's URL.
- "Add to contacts" button that downloads a correctly formatted .vcf file with name, phone, email, company, and title.
- Editable custom URL slug for the card link.
- A view counter that increments each time the card page loads, shown only to me on an admin view.
- Optional simple lead capture form (name, email, message) that a visitor can fill in when they scan my card.

Edge cases the build must handle correctly:
1. The QR code always encodes the current slug, and updates immediately if I change the slug.
2. The vCard downloads with correct headers so "add to contacts" works on both iOS Safari and Android Chrome, not just one.
3. If NFC tag programming is out of scope for the web app itself, the README explains how to program a physical NFC tag separately to point at my card URL.
4. Multiple social links display cleanly even if I only fill in one or two.
5. A lead capture submission is stored locally and is visible only on my admin view, never publicly.

So the plan that sounds like “the paid one” is actually the one that leaves your data stuck in Popl. Build your own card if you just want a shareable profile. Only pay Popl if you specifically need CRM sync.

The first version should replace what most people actually use Popl for: a shareable profile that saves someone typing your contact details.

Where will AI need human help?

NFC tap sharing needs your own hardware. Programming an NFC tag to point at your card’s URL is a separate step from building the web page, and you’ll need a writable NFC tag and an app or device capable of writing to it.

The vCard needs your testing across devices. AI’s first pass at a .vcf file often works on one phone OS and silently fails “add to contacts” on the other. Test the download on both an iPhone and an Android phone before you trust it.

Lead capture is the decision only you can make. If you want to know who scanned your card, you need a form and somewhere to store those submissions, which is more than a static page. If you don’t need that, skip it entirely and keep the build simple.

Claude or ChatGPT on a free plan handles the static card, QR code, and vCard comfortably in one conversation.

Cursor is useful if you want to iterate on the design a lot or add the lead capture backend yourself.

Lovable is the realistic route if you want lead capture with real storage, since it can wire up a small hosted database. That adds ongoing maintenance a static card doesn’t have.

What will I need to maintain?

Very little for the static card. A single hosted page on a free static host.

Recurring work:

• Update your card if your title, company, or links change
• Reprogram or replace an NFC tag if you add one and it wears out
• If you added lead capture, periodically export and back up submissions

Should I build it, buy it, or reduce scope?

Build it if you want a shareable card with your own branding and don’t need leads to sync into a CRM.
