Can AI build a job application tracker app like Teal?

Build a personal job application tracker web app to replace Teal for my own use.

Tech rules:
- Plain HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript in one file. No framework, build step, account, or server.
- Store all data in localStorage under one key, with a version number in the saved object.

Data model:
- Application: id, company, role, jobUrl, jobDescription (pasted text), stage (applied | phone screen | interview | offer | rejected), stageHistory (array of {stage, changedAt}), resumeVersion, coverLetterVersion, salaryMin, salaryMax, followUpDate, contactName, contactInfo, notes, createdAt.

Features:
- Kanban board with a column per stage. Drag a card to change its stage.
- Add application form: company, role, job URL, pasted job description, resume and cover letter version tags, salary range.
- Every stage change is logged to stageHistory with a timestamp.
- Follow-up reminders: a list of applications with a followUpDate today or earlier, shown at the top of the board.
- Archive or filter view for rejected and closed applications, hidden from the main board by default.
- Salary comparison table across all applications with an offer or interview stage.

Edge cases the build must handle correctly:
1. Track stage changes with a timestamp each time, not just the current stage, so the history shows how long each stage took.
2. Job postings have no browser extension to auto-capture them, so the add form must work cleanly with manual URL paste or a pasted job description, not assume scraped data.
3. Support multiple resume and cover letter versions tagged per application, since one person may send different resumes to different roles.
4. Follow-up reminder dates must surface on the board without a notification system, since a closed browser tab can't send an alert.
5. Salary and offer fields must support a range and compare cleanly across applications with different currencies or missing values.
6. Archiving or filtering rejected and closed applications must not delete their data, only hide it from the main board.
7. Notes and contact info per recruiter or interviewer must be editable per application, not shared globally.
8. Detect the same job reposted across multiple job boards by company and role name, and warn before creating a duplicate card.

Backup and import:
- One-click "Export JSON" and "Export CSV" buttons, with no gate or upsell.
- "Import JSON" restores a full backup after a confirmation that it replaces current data.

Layout:
- Mobile-first, thumb-friendly, readable at 375px wide. Works in Safari and Chrome.

Exclusions:
- No publishing, App Store submission, accounts, login, payments, sharing, collaboration, browser extension, or AI resume matching.

Also write a short README that explains where the data lives, how to export and restore it, and that clearing browser data deletes everything.

Keep it under 900 lines. This is a personal tool, not a product.

What is the short answer?

Yes. AI can build a job application tracker that replaces Teal+ at Weekly $13/week, Monthly $29/month, or Quarterly $79/quarter for one person in an afternoon. The Job Tracker board itself is already free and unlimited on Teal, so what you’re really replacing with a build is the AI resume matching upsell and Teal’s own prompts to buy it.

The trade-off is manual entry. Teal+ doesn’t include a browser extension to auto-capture postings either, so this isn’t a gap you’re creating by building. What you do lose is AI keyword matching against a job description and a formatted resume builder, both of which stay behind Teal’s paywall either way.

What should the first version include?

The first version needs a board you trust to hold every application and its current stage. Everything else comes after a week of use.

• Kanban board with applied, phone screen, interview, offer, and rejected columns
• Manual entry for job postings, since there’s no browser extension either way
• Multiple resume and cover letter versions tagged per application
• Follow-up reminder dates surfaced at the top of the board
• Notes and contact info per recruiter or interviewer
• Deliberate exclusion: no AI resume keyword matching or ATS scoring. That’s the one part of Teal that’s genuinely hard to rebuild, and it’s also the only part you were ever paying for.

What can AI build reliably?

ChatGPT and Claude produce a working single-file kanban tracker on the first try. The board, drag-to-change-stage, and localStorage saving work out of the box because they’re common patterns.

Concrete things AI gets right quickly:

• A kanban board with stage columns and drag-to-move cards
• Manual entry fields for job postings, URL and pasted description
• Timestamped stage-change history per application
• Export buttons that download JSON and CSV with no gate
• A salary comparison table across applications with offers

Filtering rejected applications out of the main view and reminder sorting are also quick wins once the board works.

Where will AI need human help?

AI needs your help deciding how to log stage changes over time. Ask for every stage change to be timestamped and stored in a history array, not just overwritten, so you can see how long each application sat at “interview” before it moved. Test this by moving one card through all five stages and checking the history.

Capturing a job posting without a browser extension is the second thing to verify. Since there’s no extension, test that pasting a URL or copy-pasting a full job description into the add form works cleanly and doesn’t choke on long text.

Other checks to run yourself:

• Tagging two different resume versions on two applications to the same company
• A follow-up reminder date that has already passed, showing at the top of the board
• Deduplicating the same job reposted on two different job boards
• Archiving a rejected application and confirming it’s hidden but not deleted

Privacy is simple for personal use. Your applications, salary figures, and notes never leave your browser. The flip side is that clearing browser data deletes everything, so the backup button is not optional.

Can I get my data out of Teal?

Teal’s Knowledge Base references an “Export Report” and “Download Data” option on the Job Tracker dashboard, and third-party tooling confirms real users export their data as CSV, including salary fields. Whether this is available on the free plan or requires Teal+ isn’t confirmed [VERIFY].

The direct source pages for this returned an HTTP 403 on every fetch attempt, so treat the export mechanics as likely but not double-checked [VERIFY]. No export trap was found: nothing suggests completed or archived applications are excluded from the download the way some competitors exclude finished items.

To import your exported CSV into your build, adapt the starter prompt’s import step to read your Teal CSV’s columns once you’ve confirmed what they are, since the exact column names weren’t verified [VERIFY].

How long will it take and what will it cost?

Rough prototype: 2–3 hours and $0 on a free ChatGPT or Claude plan. You’ll have a working board with stages and manual entry.

Dependable daily-use version: 6–9 hours across a week, including fixes for stage history and reminder sorting. $0–$20 if you pay for one month of an AI plan to speed up the fixes.

Against Teal+’s monthly price of $29, a $20 AI month pays for itself in under 2 months. Against the weekly price of $13/week, it pays for itself in under 2 weeks.

These figures are estimates from reviewing the feature set. They are not measurements from a completed test build.

Which AI tool or approach should I use?

Claude is a good default. It previews single-file HTML apps directly in the chat, so you can click through the kanban board before saving anything.

ChatGPT works equally well for the first version. Paste the starter prompt, save the output as index.html, and open it in your browser.

Cursor is the better choice once the file passes 500 lines and you want to fix one bug, like reminder sorting, without regenerating the whole app.

Lovable builds faster-looking results but pushes you toward accounts and a hosted database, which adds the maintenance you’re trying to avoid for a tool only you use.

What will I need to maintain?

Almost nothing. The app is one HTML file with no server, no API, and no bill.

Your recurring work:

• Export a JSON backup once a week and save it somewhere outside the browser
• Re-open the app in the same browser; a different browser or a private window starts empty
• Fix small bugs as you find them during your first 2 weeks of job searching

If you want the board on your phone, save the file to your phone’s Files app or put it on a free static host and add it to your home screen. Hosting publicly means anyone with the link can open the empty app, but your application data stays in your own browser.

Should I build it, buy it, or reduce scope?

Build it if you’re using Teal mainly for the free kanban board already and don’t touch the AI matching or resume builder features that sit behind Teal+.

Buy it if you actively use AI resume keyword matching, match scoring against job descriptions, or Teal’s formatted resume builder. Those are the features Teal+ genuinely gates, and rebuilding an ATS-style matching engine yourself is a much bigger project than a tracker.

Reduce scope if you’re applying to fewer than 10 jobs at a time. A single spreadsheet with a stage column covers that volume, and a build only pays off once manual tracking gets tedious.

Recommendation: build it if the free Teal board is already covering your needs and you just want the upsell prompts gone and your data fully in your own hands. Keep Teal+ if you lean on its AI resume matching, since that’s the one piece this build doesn’t replace.

What if I wanted to ship this to other people?

Shipping this means adding accounts, a database, and multi-user access if you wanted others to track their own applications on the same tool. That’s a separate project measured in weeks, not hours. The personal build above is a starting point, not a shortcut to a product.
